Inner Peace

Wânaskêwin “Inner Peace”

Wânaskêwin is a Cree word that roughly translates to “being at peace with oneself or “seeking peace of mind”.

For me, art is one way I search for that peace.

It’s my tool—a process of making sense of the world, and of myself.

My work often carries the energy of a journey through struggle—
but also the strength that came with it.

It’s become a tool for healing—and hope.

Years ago, my friend Cody—rest in peace—visited my studio.

He said something I’ve never forgotten:

“You have to walk through your own darkness to find your own light.”

That moment stayed with me,
and in many ways, it continues to guide my work.

Cody’s greatest strength was his inner peace.

This painting was inspired by that—by him.

It’s raw, honest, and real.
 Rough and textured.

To me, the scars are beautiful.

The surface speaks to the strength it takes to peel back the layers of life—
and the deeper strength it takes to heal.

This piece is my way of honouring Cody and the quiet power of choosing peace.
