About "Heart of Leader"

Humbleness comes from an inner strength knowing who we are and our purpose; to not flaunt, but simply be who we are meant to be.

This painting of Conner McDavid doesn’t really needs any explanation.

His pose is strong and focused. The “heart” symbolizes the love of the game of hockey that many share here in Edmonton. The tattooed graffitied wings serve a dual function: to elevate that love – to make it soar and also to symbolize the fact that he can skate really really fast. Every time he gets the pucks he takes flight. Every time he gets the pucks you feel like something amazing will happen and there’s a very good chance it will result in a scoring opportunity. This is a rare and special thing and as an artist a challenge to capture.

The cool thing about the wings is that they are only “half painted” – not fully developed which serves to symbolize the fact that he will continue to improve – he will get better as a player and as a leader which will only serve to elevate the game of hockey and everyone he leads and mentors.

There’s lessons to be learned from quality leadership values. I live by these lesson in the leadership and community work that I’ve been able to do here in Edmonton. These are painted into the art to share with the community and especially to inspire young people.

  • Model the Way

  • Enable Others to Act

  • Encourage the Heart

  • Inspire a Shared Vision

Today: Resilience AND Cancer Coaching. Covid AND Young People.

I spent the past 8 years developing a simple but powerful tool and wellness coaching system called PEPY. It evolved out of my passion to coach and help empower cancer patients and their families as well as others who faced life battles and adversity.

I believe our PEPY coaching tool is needed now more than ever to help develop pro-active resilience especially for our younger generation. The economic and cultural impact of COVID is creating unprecedented mental health and life challenges for them. Our hope is to make PEPY (a social enterprise) widely available via an online APP and “Social Prescribing Model” which will drive a strong focus on developing a resilient mindset. The body can’t go where the mind won’t take it.

The PEPY model was also designed to form a new foundation and approach for a true health care system for everybody. A proactive model based on lifestyle medication versus the current break-fix reactive model.
